Stanger Vineyards
“Jewel of the Central Coast”
Introduction:
STANGER Vineyards is a small 9.5 acre portion of the 178 acre “J” Ranch. This ideal Westside location has everything a quality wine grape would want: soil, water and climate. Couple that with hands on care and you get exactly what we were looking for, grapes that are destined to become great wine.
June, 2009
The Vineyard
As usual, the STANGER vineyard was not affected by the frosts of April & May. Our high ridge elevation of
1,500 ft. is almost immune to early or late frosts that damage grape vines in the lower areas. In fact we are
showing an increase in cluster count. Also, we've completed extensive trenching on the roads surrounding the
vineyard. It was decided that trenching would sever the encroaching roots of the adjacent Oak trees thereby
allowing the vineyard to receive all of the water supplied to it. We expect our vineyard to ripen right on time
again and at an ideal Brix reading.
Our resident Gray Fox, Great Horned Owls and some Barn Owls have been getting their fill of gophers. I'm sure
the hard to spot Coyotes and Bobcats are also helping. I feel that I should be paying them for their efforts. Vine
loses due to gopher damage are minimal now.
Winery Report
We have just decided to release a STANGER Cuvee in late August. At approximately $40 per bottle
this vintage of 100 cases will sell out quickly. Its name will be announced in August also. All other STANGER
Reserve varietals will be sold on an allocation basis again.
At the Tasting Room
The drop jaw views from the tasting room should not be affected by our planting of trees as part of the initial
landscaping. Our outdoor tasting bar (for overflow guests) is complete and ready for action. In the fall we hope
this bar will help with seating also for the outdoor showing of films at night under the stars.
The Creston House at STANGER Vineyards
This four bedroom home should be ready for daily renting in the fall. The $300-$400 per night should make it
irresistible.
